Documentation Writing Guide

Standards and best practices for GOAT documentation.

General Rules

Writing Style

  • Focus on user benefits, not tool names in the intro
  • Use simple, direct language and shorter sentences
  • code for buttons/fields, Bold for UI elements.
  • Use the glossary.md to write the right terms from GOAT UI and to make the german translations.

Images

  • Center images with consistent styling (maxHeight: "400px")
  • Use descriptive alt text

Others

  • Include glossary links to the term on the website glossary (/en/glossary/... on English pages, /de/glossar/... on German pages). They get a hover preview with the term's short description automatically, e.g.:
    [H3 grid](https://www.plan4better.de/en/glossary/h3-grid)
  • Link to other docs pages with Markdown links, also inside step blocks, e.g. [Routing](../../category/routing). Never use <a href> for them: the build checks Markdown links and points them to the page in the reader's language, but passes <a href> through unchecked, so a root-relative one such as /category/routing leaves the German docs. <a href> is fine for links to other websites.
  • Use info boxes for important notes: :::info and :::tip
  • After the main title and before the explanation, add the Youtube video, if available, using the following iframe format and size:
